The San Sebastian prison in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba is home to about 1,000 prisoners. However, the peculiar labyrinth is more like a strange surrealist lair, with a church, a school, an electronics shop, and a market. The viewer becomes one of the prisoners, accused of cocaine smuggling. However, with the theatrical mask on, he falls into an imaginative play in which the distinctions between reality and dream and guilt and innocence are blurred.

Violeta Ayala

The Bolivian-Australian filmmaker has so far focused mainly on documentary filmmaking. The prestigious Toronto International Film Festival screened her film Cocaine Prison (2017), in which she began to address the topic of the prison system in Bolivia. She later developed this further in her VR project.
