This historical romance and last film by Max Ophüls is based on the dramatic life of the famous dancer, singer and courtesan Lola Montes. The still beautiful but ageing and disillusioned Lola became a star performer in an American circus. Her number consisted of parading the most scandalous events of her life, from the unhappy marriage to her own mother's boyfriend to tumultuous relationships with famous personalities of the 19th century, including real kings.
