The beautiful Louise is married to a virtuous captain and her morals are looser than is appropriate for an upper-class French woman in the late 19th century. When she gets in financial troubles, she decides to sell her diamond earrings. But by a hand of fate, they come back to her. The journey the jewellery has travelled, and the circumstances of their return to Louise, lead to her inner transformation. This romantic drama was nominated for an Oscar for the Best Costume Design.

Max Ophüls

The iconic German director started working as a theatre actor at an early age, eventually also directing. He discovered cinema as Anatole Litvak's assistant and throughout his career in Germany, France and the USA, he made many films that belong to the classics of the world cinema. He was nominated for two Oscars and won a FIPRESCI for lifetime achievement at Berlinale.
