Deeply religious Maud takes a job as a nurse in the lavish home of Amanda, a once-famous dancer bedridden by spinal cancer. The two women soon find a mutual understanding, but it is only a matter of time before the darker side of Maud's personality comes into play. This much-discussed British film fits right in with contemporary horror films with artistic ambitions. Rather than a genre spectacle, however, it delivers a powerful and ambivalent spiritual experience, exceptional from both the visual and sonic points of view.
