The French film inverts the well-known scheme of romantic comedies. It is not the wife, the busy concert pianist Claire, who longs for a child, but her husband Frederic. He takes the foul step of replacing his wife’s birth control with a placebo. He does not realise how much stress, frustration and pain the huge belly will cause his partner. The poignant feminist comedy reveals that some expressions of male love are just poorly disguised misogyny.

Sophie Letourner

The director and screenwriter was praised to the skies in France for her debut Chicks (2009), and her later comedies Les coquillettes (2012) and Gaby Baby Doll (2014) are popular as well. Her short film Le marin masqué (2011) premiered in Locarno. Enormous, the fourth feature film by the distinctive filmmaker, received a César nomination and was named one of the ten best films of the year by Cahiers du Cinéma.
