An Orthodox Jewish family gets a message that their youngest son and his fiancée have been kidnapped. The ransom is so steep that they must sell the family business and even go far beyond that. Kantemir Balagov's debut is set in Russia in the 1990s, dealing with religious prejudices and hatred. The film provoked strong reactions during its premiere in Cannes because of its allegedly authentic shots of violence.
