Czech Track, our new programme section

Emilia Vasaryova in Eva Nova

This year’s unprecedented number of films shot as Czech productions or co-productions, gave rise to the new programme section Czech Track. Some of these films appear in other sections. Two Czech distribution previews will also be featured in the New Europe Competition. The first film Já, Olga Hepnarová is about the last woman to be executed for mass murder in Czechoslovakia. The film is the directorial debut of Tomáš Weinreb and Petr Kazda, and it will be presented in the prestigious Panorama section at the Berlinale. Eva Nová, the film directed by Marko Škop and starring Slovakian actress Emília Vášáryová, who portrays the actress struggling with alcoholism, won the International Critics’ Prize (FIPRESCI) in Toronto in September. The festival will screen another Czech distribution premiere, Šiška Deluxe, a bizarre comedy about men in their forties, who are struggling in both life and business. The film was directed by Jan Cvitkovič and recently won the Audience Award at the FilmFestival Cottbus in Germany. In the Tribute to Jan Cvitkovič section, the audience can see two more films by the Slovenian director. Czech Track will screen the world premiere of the special effects film Smrtelné history (Fatal Stories) starring Jan Budař and Pavel Landovský, and directed by Jan Bubeníček, who combines actors with 3D and 2D animation including motion capture and the use of puppets. Road-Movie, the feature film debut of the FAMU graduate Martin Jelínek, will be screened at the festival as a Czech premiere preview, as will the film Prach by another FAMU graduate Vít Zapletal. Audiences can also see The Red Spider, a thriller inspired by real serial murders in the 1960s Poland, which will enter Czech distribution after Febiofest.
