Amnesty International Febiofest Award

Amnesty International Febiofest Award

It all started last year when Febiofest supported Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian filmmaker and activist who was abducted in Crimea and deported to Russia, where he was sentenced to 20 years in a political process. The support was in cooperation with the European Film Academy and its Deputy Chairman, British producer Mike Downey who was a guest of Febiofest last year and is directly in charge of the Sentsov case. It was his idea to join with the Czech branch of the human rights organisation of Amnesty International, which is also fighting and campaigning for Sentsov, and to begin a tradition of awarding a film prize related to human rights. This award originally was to have been named The Oleg Sentsov Award. However, we eventually agreed that what we all hope for might happen in a year or two and Oleg will be released. And since it's not only him, but numerous other filmmakers, artists, journalists and bloggers worldwide who are wrongfully imprisoned by dictatorial regimes for their opinions, we want this award to be dedicated to all and to have a more general value. This is why we finally approved the name of the Amnesty International / Febiofest Award. We hope that it will become a part of Febiofest and will last – at least as long as there are prisoners of conscience around the world.
