Movie synopsis: Chaya is a young open-minded Jewish woman whose unrestrained lifestyle is far from the strict rules of orthodox Judaism. She only knows the horrors of World War II from her parents' stories, as they have never managed to let go of the past and who fill all moments together with those grisly tales. The girl's radical opinions about her own culture are affected by her experience in a new job as a nanny in an orthodox Jewish family, as she is confronted with their dogged faith and rules on a daily basis. With sensitivity and gentle humour, Jeroen Krabbe's directing debut introduces different approaches of two generations to dealing with the tragic past. The film won the Special Mention for Isabella Rossellinni at Berlinale in 1988.
