Movie synopsis: Schoolboy Jia Le’s behavior aggravates his teachers and his parents, so his mother, Hwee Leng, decides to employ a Philippine nanny, Terry, who came to Singapore in search of a better paid job. The tension between the boy and the nanny is magnified by Hwee Leng, whose character isn't exactly perfect either. Anthony Chen’s debut is an intriguing, intimate family drama, aided by the precise screenplay, attention to everyday details and sensitive camera. Apart from the psychological insight into the characters, it also focuses on the desolate situation of Singapore in the 1990s, torn by crisis as well as social and racial problems. Despite its succinct narration and style, the film is spellbinding.
Awards and Nominations: Cannes IFF (2013) - Caméra d'or for best debut
