This biographical film about Romain Gary focuses on the period before he adopted his famous French writing alias. The comical and dramatic scenes focus on his complicated relationship with his overly ambitious mother (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Her dreams and demands accompany him from childhood in Poland between the wars, through his studies in Paris, and also after joining the air force in WWII.
