Ryota can't let go of his long-faded fame of a once-successful writer. He spends all the money he makes as a private eye on gambling and he has trouble paying child support for his son. After his father dies, Ryota tries to reconnect with his family and earn his son's trust again, but they gave up on him long ago. When a storm traps him in the apartment with them one summer night, he gets one more chance.

Hirokazu Kore-eda

The Japanese director follows the tradition of Japanese cinema, characteristic for its humanism, compassion and understanding. He has made several documentaries and is well-known among audiences as well as critics thanks to his live-action debut Maborosi. His following films have also enjoyed success at festivals worldwide. His second-to-latest film Shoplifters won a Palme d'Or at Cannes.
