The jury for this year’s Amnesty International Award, which will go to the director of one of eight films with a human rights theme, will be comprised of actress Ester Geislerová, Lithuanian actress and violinist Lora Kmieliauskaite and Martin Balcar of Amnesty International. This year the organization is drawing attention to the imprisonment of Iranian filmmaker Keywan Karimi. A member of Iran’s Kurdish minority and the maker of 12 highly regarded documentaries and feature films, he received a six-year prison term in November 2016 in an unjust trial. At present, there is the possibility of his sentence being commuted to a conditional term and Amnesty International is heading a campaign for his unconditional release. The director suffers from a lung condition and bone disease but the prison authorities refuse to transfer him to hospital. It is necessary to show that the world stands beside Keywan, whose case is now extremely urgent.
