Northern Lights
The film production of the Nordic countries often supposedly moves in the genre waters of dark crime stories and absurd comedies with quirky characters, with both always supported by dreamy scenery and pensive music. This year's selection conforms to this simplification only partly. We subvert this pattern by including a documentary about a world chess champion and the Norwegian director Joachim Trier's first English speaking film set in America. The selection also includes several psychological dramas depicting the problematic teenage years of young protagonists or the surly aging of their parents.
