Movie synopsis: Carmela and Paulino are a duo of travelling troubadours who perform for Republican units during the Civil War. They are accompanied by a young man who became mute after the shocks of the bombings. One day, they find themselves in hostile territory and are imprisoned together with the members of international brigades. A theatre-loving Italian fascist officer promises them freedom if they perform a modified play for the nationalist soldiers. What will Carmela, a fiery patriot, do? The film won thirteen Goya awards and was also praised by critics, who especially emphasised Carmen Maura's performance in the lead role.
