Movie synopsis: “An” is a sweet red bean paste which connects two pancakes and is key for the right taste of a traditional Japanese dessert called dorayaki. Old Mrs Tokue has her own recipe, which might save a declining bakery. The bakery is (mis)managed by Sentaro, who at first resists accepting help from a woman who invades his kitchen from the street. The meeting of two lonely people, who are later joined by young Wakana, offers a meditation about barriers between people, their slow dismantling, and the importance of the right recipe. Naomi Kawase's film flows in peaceful observations and tender examinations of her protagonists, emphasising the metaphor of the preparation of the pivotal confection.
