Peter Mullan, a Scottish theatre and film actor and director, was born in Petershead in eastern Scotland. He began to focus on acting during his studies at university, and his debut on the silver screen came in 1990 in the supporting role of Vince in David Leland's Big Man, followed by a role in Ken Loach's Riff-Raff (1991). Mullan collaborated with this renowned director again later in his career on My Name Is Joe. His performance in this film earned him a prestigious award for the best actor at Cannes IFF in 1998. The 1990’s brought a breakthrough in the actor's career thanks to two iconic films by the British director Danny Boyle, Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, in which Mullan played the drug dealer Swanney. In mid 1990’s, Peter Mullan also started to focus on directing. After short films, Close and Fridge, his feature debut called Orphans, based on his own screenplay, came in 1998. His greatest international directorial success so far came with his second full-length film, The Magdalene Sisters (2002). The historical drama, set in a Magdalene Asylum where the nuns have absolute power over their charges, won the Golden Lion at Venice IFF. This year's Febiofest illustrates Mullan's excellent acting with Hector (2014) and Sunset Song (2015), which depicts his native Scotland in the early 20th century.
