Movie synopsis: In another co-production, Mike Downey offers a darkly humorous depiction of a dictatorship surviving in the post-Soviet territory (similarly to The President, also screened at the festival). Director and scriptwriter Ben Hopkins collaborated with Pawel Pawlikowski (who recently won an Oscar for Ida) on the script, and the result is a sarcastic picture that pokes fun at tyranny and artistic pride. The main protagonist, acclaimed director Emil (Matthew Macfayden), suffering from writer's block, accepts an invitation to Karastan to attend a local festival. The president and dictator orders him to make an epic film about the national hero of Karastan. Emil realizes too late that he was blinded by his own ego and he has become a puppet of the national “ego”, personified by the charismatic ruler.
