Movie synopsis: September 1944 – the last days of the Warsaw Uprising. Lieutenant Zadra's platoon cannot break the German siege, so they go down into the canals, trying to get to the city centre where the rebels still keep fighting. In the filthy tunnels full of sewage, the protagonists' tragic fate is fulfilled. Now considered to be a classic piece of Polish cinema, the film was given a cold reception at its premiere. It presents the story of the end of the Warsaw Uprising in an “anti-heroic” manner. It was the award of the Cannes Jury that persuaded Polish critics that the film is an artistically sincere attempt to evaluate and dismantle the myth of a key moment of Polish history.
