Movie synopsis: Peter Greenaway, a painter by education, once said, “If you want to tell stories, become a writer, not a filmmaker,” a statement that sheds light on his approach to film art. A factory hall substitutes a Baroque environment, but it also develops the story. Engraver and painter Goltzius with his ensemble approaches the Margrave to persuade him to become their benefactor. The nobleman is supposed to provide financing for Gotzius' life project – the illustrations of the Bible and Ovid's Metamorphoses. Yet the Margrave requires to be entertained by a dramatization of selected Biblical (and, above all) erotic scenes. Apart from the visually provocative sequences of images, the film discusses the truly current issue of the relationship between art and its funding.
