Movie synopsis: Last year’s most successful Polish film is an autobiographical picture in the best sense: it describes the beginnings of the career of Professor Zbigniew Religa, who performed the first successful heart transplant in Poland in the 1980s. The portrait of a brilliant personality, who dared to change prevalent principles under unfavourable circumstances, begins when the doctor leaves a promising career in Warsaw to seize a new opportunity and establish a cardiac surgery clinic in the mining town of Zabrze. Yet he faces not only a lack of funding, but also the opposition of older colleagues. The film was awarded the Golden Lion at a festival of Polish cinema in Gdynia.
