Movie synopsis: In a nameless African country of today, Maria (Isabelle Huppert) is in charge of a coffee plantation where she lives with her family. A war erupts in the country, the rebels fight with the use of child soldiers and the French army is withdrawing. They request that Maria's family heads for safety as well. She refuses and the family conflicts escalate when the war reaches their doorstep. Claire Denis, a famous director who has been focusing on African colonialism and social criticism during her whole long career, narrates Maria's story with a documentary-like intensity and urgency. One of the most critically acclaimed films of 2009.
