 FEBIOFEST IS FESTIVAL OF NATIONS
In the night of Friday, 30th January, the Prague screen halls welcomed the last spectators of the XI. year of Febiofest, while the film festival set out for a journey across other cities. „The overriding impression of mine about this year’s Febiofest is that all Gods have stood by us, and they love Febiofest similarly as the spectators do, “says the director of the festival Fero Fenič.

What is the director’s impression of Febiofest 2004?
Due to the last year’s experience, I thought nothing would surprise me. The interest of spectators was unprecedented, the atmosphere splendid, the programme of good duality, and the reactions of foreign guests were zealous. Yet this year’s progress – from the beginning of the ticket sale up to the course of the entire festival – has altogether surpassed my expectations. Many of the screenings were sold out even before the launching of the festival itself. The work of the festival team has improved in all fields. And even the reporting of Echo of Febiofest on Prima TV and in the newspaper Lidové noviny offered far more comprehensive information service.

The festival club of Febiofest has slowly but surely become the hit.
26 groups have performed this year. One of the spectators told me that he has not experienced similar atmosphere of mutual tolerance anywhere else in this country. Ethnic and minority festivals are usually determined by the related circle of audience, yet here all intertwines in incredible symbiosis. A Romany group plays in the afternoon, followed by a Jewish group, and the evening is crowned by the performance of Arab music... Meanwhile, also gays, Indian people, or Ukrainians come to the club from the screen halls and they all meet, enjoying Slovak cuisine. This is the very source of my pride and contentment – the fact that Febiofest has become a festival of nations, which is also proven by the several thousands of sold-up programmes only produced in English. Moreover, even some significant foreign producers and directors of other festivals have begun to discover Febiofest in Prague, and I was quite surprised to find out that our website has been searched for some kind of information by people from 46 countries of the world!

What changes do you consider for the XII. Year of Febiofest?
The Christmas season and the period around New Year shorten our time for efficient preparations – for no-one in the world communicates with us for at least two weeks. Due to this fact, even this year’s Febiofest encountered problems with the programme deadline and the following punctual advance ticket sale. In order to prevent these troubles in the future, we consider postponing the date of the festival for a few weeks. This step may even enrich the festival with the freshest releases from the festivals in Rotterdam and Berlin, which at present immediately follow our event.
Moreover, we intend to look for the way in which we could offer our audience more seats in the screen halls and re-run more films, as well as force the agencies, arranging the film translations for us, to do a better job. This also includes an improvement as far as the ticket sale is concerned, which is impossible to achieve at the moment with regards to the limited number of ticket offices in Slovanský dům. Therefore, we cannot exclude the possibility that even the site of the festival will be changed. The possible children’s “fest” represents another novelty for the next year. Our audience include all generations, but so far we have not paid attention to children spectators yet. And at last we surely intend to consider the possibility of morning screenings at weekends.

Febiofest now sets out for various regions as well as for Slovakia. Yet sometimes the audience outside Prague complain that you “only” introduce one hundred films to them.
The achievement of our team every year is a small production miracle, carried out by no other festival in Europe. Nevertheless, I apologise to all who complain that it is not within our might to organise a festival of the same range in every city of this country. It is far more complicated than one may imagine because it does not only concern financial matters but also the will of the owners of authorial rights (this year from 58 countries of the world!) to grant us films for more screenings. Yet even if the modest offer is considered, Febiofest represents the year’s largest film festival that takes place in the participating cities during. And, moreover, we truly try to share the best pieces of the Prague film cake with them.

In conclusion, what would you offer exclusively to the visitors of your website?
For the next year, we would like to invite them to vote for the most successful film of the festival, and, based on the votes of the website visitors, the ‘Spectators’ prize’ may be awarded in the end of the festival.
Besides, I would like to thank all spectators for their interest in our festival and for their tolerance towards all possible imperfections they may have encountered – but hopefully they have realised themselves that we do all our work with our hearts and that all the flaws that arise simply represent a natural and legitimate accompanying phenomenon of every living event of such extent – even if the event were prepared most perfectly, it is not always possible to prevent all these imperfections on time.
Let me also express my thanks to those whose help is vital for the existence and development of our festival – above all to the general partner ČSOB a.s., main partner ČESKÝ TELECOM a.s., the Capital PRAGUE, to the Parliament of the Czech Republic, to the main medial partner PRIMA TV, medial partners LIDOVÉ NOVINY, the radio IMPULS and the daily METRO, the hotel MERCURE ACCOR, where our foreign guests were accommodated, to the Ural Airlines that saved us when Czech Airlines repudiated us, to the wonderful VOLVO automobiles that drove our guests around, and last but not least, to Palace Cinemas who bravely bore the burden of the entire Prague festival in their screen halls and other spaces.
Finally I would like to express my special thanks to the authors and providers of this website, the company GRAFFITTI NETWORKS who provide a great support and comfort to us (and hopefully also for you, the visitors)! Robert and Roman, thank you!
Thanks to all that I have not named – they are innumerable indeed. I will give my personal thanks to the members of the team because they had to suffer the most with me! But hopefully, they all have had the feeling that they have helped a meaningful cause to be born and realised.
Thank you and see you next year!

 WEBMASTERS TIP - 30.01.2004
Hallo everybody. I would like to welcome you at the last Prague´s Day of Febiofest 2005. Yesterday I manager to go to see only 1 film „Zaitochi“, and I was very excited about this film. Unfortunately cca 100 other people might not had a little pain from sitting on stairs (Palace Cinemas sold 100 tickets over capacity ???, strange isn’t it?)

Anyhow, the film was awsome!!! To not spoil the film to somebody who did not see it yet, and plans to see it, I will be very global. If would you expect a classic Samurai-type film with never-ending sword fights, than this is a bit different. This movie is very funny, I take it as a comedy. The situation, dialogues and sometimes the scenes, where the brain just ask itself: “What? What was that?” … Well, Takeshi Kitano is a film master. Great camera, story, fun, and those who wanted to see the pumping blood and flying limbs, will also be not disappointed. I also appreciate that the fights are more realistic, it is not those 15 minutes fight like in K.Bill but 5 – 10 seconds fights as it is in reality. The ending is a surprise, maybe multiply surprise, because those who will not believe me that it is comedy will change their opinion than, and there is more surprises to come. If you will ask me: “Would you go to see it second time?”. My answer would be: “Yes, many times” I guess this will be very popular film.

Tips for today: Good Bye Dragon Inn, Granny, Decline of the American Empire, The Cordon, Osama ...

Tip for tomorrow: Sleep long, relax, and look forward to next FEBIOFEST 2005

Bye, Your Webmasta

 WEBMASTERS TIP - 29.01.2004
Hallo Thursday visitors … Yesterday I went to see only 1 and half of film unfortunately. First on was sure shot, Whale Rider. Second one, which I had to leave unfortunately, was from Ripstein “The Virgin of Lust”. Friends, they went to see Flickering Lights.

Whale rider, this was well done movie. Great film, mastership, surroundings and the story. I was excited to see how the director’s close-up the Maori Culture, details from picture and dialogues, family relationships and their customs. Maybe the film is too sweet, but I can assure you it did not trouble me. I was leaving the cinema happy in good mood ready to go to see Southpaw (which were by the way AWSOME!!!).

The Virgin of Lust: This film from section “Portrait of Arturo Ripstein” is his latest. Made in 2000, this film takes us with its atmosphere back to 1940, Mexico. I have to say that the set , colors, light, dialogs, camera ... the whole thing remind me old style movie making with touch of nowadays ... By nowadays, I mean ... i.e. lines that before could not be spoken, or the sexual fetish vibe that would back in forties-fifties would be banned. I really liked this film, unfortunately I had to leave (work), but I am sure that when I get the chance to see it, I will get back to it.

My friends saw Flickering Lights from M. T. Jensen. I saw the film about 2 years ago. I remember that it was quit interesting movie full of tough gigs and dark humor. Gang of 4 funny thieves is trying to get lost from their boss (them + 4 mill dollars), they find old house, try to make a pub out of it ... and so forth ... but boss will find them ... but it is not the guys he saw last time. Everybody has changed ... but somebody new has changed too ... Good fun, definitely go to see it. You won’t regret (not for weak!!!)

Tip for today:
Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry, It´s All About Love, Distant, Zatoichi, The Trespasser, Chihwaseon / Painted Fire

Tip for tomorrow: Good Bye Dragon Inn, Granny, Decline of the American Empire, The Cordon, Osama ...

 WEBMASTERS TIPS - 28.01.2004
Pokud by jste chtěli něco k filmům napsat, pište.

Pomstí Paul a Christina smrt Thmomase a dětí .. ?

On, aby se s ní mohl nakonec setkat, oslepne vlastní rukou. Film má velice působivou obrazovou i hudební stránku a lze jej doporučit nejen milovníkům poetické tvorby, ale i všem ostatním.

Tipy na dnešek: Panna chlípnosti, Černý led, Pán velryb (opakování), Hop (opakování), Edi (opakování), Rekonstrukce (opakování), Správný ženský jsou do kulata a pořádný béčko nakonec „Hvězdný kriminál“ (na ten jsem celkem dost zvědav)

Tipy na zítřek: Samurai (opakování), Daleko, Narušitel, Alfred (opakování), Jonny Vang (opakování), Podvojné účetnictví … (opakování), Žluté mango (opakování)

 WEBMASTER TIP - 27.01.2004

Hallo my friends. So lets talk about yesterday. I did not make it to the „Love Me If You Dare“ but I saw the film Jonny Vang, 29 Palms, The Barbarian Invasions.

I will mix a sequence and I will start with 29 PALMS. Now, I know that you do not have to agree with me, but this is how I felt when I saw it. It is very minimalist film. I guess too much for me. I put it to my “tip to see” but I was very disappointed with the film. Actually I did not like it, thought I can understand that somebody loved that. I guess that this is king of movie with you either love it, or do not like it at all. I do not want to write much about it, I guess that if I would come for the last 29 minutes I would see it all and I would not miss a film such as Yellow Mango (Brazilian movie) which apparently was great (just the translator did not turn up ... what a shame, but Tereza Brdeckova from Febiofest did great job)

On the other hand, Jonny Vang was a film that perfectly started my film-day. Before I thought that the Scandinavian section will be mot such a great like last year (just remind i.e. Elling), but I saw 3 films so far from this section and all were great!! Jonny Vang was bright comedy with dark humor. The actor, Aksel Hennie (Jonny), was great. The role suited him. I guess that he did not play at all, it looked all so natural. Look at the detail of the film for what about it was, but I tell you a hint Swedish Tripple (or Norvegian Tripple). Anyhow, ... crisp and funny.

At the end I went to see “The Barbarian Invasions”. After those 29 palms, I thought that I am not going to see anything. I had just enough. But I am happy that I stayed. This great story is not about death as some people say. It is about life. It is full of life!!! The death is only part of this life. Father of Sebastian, university professor, has few more days to live. Sebastian did not have much to talk about to father before, he was intellectual left-winged, red a lots of books, Sebastian was great businessman right-winged, did not read any of the book, just the screen on laptop. Sebastian starts to feel his debt to his father, and with money power and with old father friend he does everything to make last days of his dad great. He gets together all his friends from all around world (very funny group of people, it is fun t o see how the rebels become to be sophisticated people ...), he reconstruct the floor of the hospital, instead of the depressing Morphine he gets him Heroin to kill the pain, rent for him a holiday house next to the lake, which he loves and where he can peacefully leave this world among those who love him. I Repeat, it is not about dying, it is about our life, our loves, about getting to know that our view on one thing can be different with eyes that look at it. I did not see any “Barbarian”, may be we are the “Barbarians”, I do not know, may be this was the film trying to tell us.

Tips for today: 21 grams, The Son, Human Stain (repeated), Five Obstructions (repeated), The Queen of the Night, Puppets ...

Tips for tomorrow: Whale Rider, The Virgin of Lust, Black Ice, Hop (repeated) and many more … regards … your Webmasta

 WEBMASTERS TIP - 26.01.2004
Hallo everybody. As I have written day before, I went to see few film that have gotten under my skin ... HOP, RECONSTRUCTION, I IS ALL ABOUT LOVE, CHRISTIE MALRY´S DOUBLE-ENTRY.

All of above films did not dissapoint me. Hop has very interesting story of immigrants in Belgium, this little dark comedy was very refreshing start of movie marathon. Do you know what Hop means in Burundi? No! Go to see the film, it has something to do with balls. :-))

Reconstruction - you might get a little confused, I was in a minute thinking that it is mind of the writer, that changes characters, but it was just a film ... in film anything is possible, film is Construction, this was Reconstruction of Construction ... weird, ehh? Go to see it if you can.

It is all about love - answer of the nature on human coldness, people dying because of lack of love, earth is getting iced, and story of 2 young people who fight for their love get back and survive ... This great Vinterberg film will leave a mark in you!

My tip for today: Twenty-nine palms, Jonny Vang, Invasion of Barbars, Love Me If You Dare.

Tomorrow pleas pay attention to 21 grams, five obstructions (second time) Puppets ... and many more ... see you in cinema ... Webmasta

 WEBMASTERS TIP - 25.01.2004
Yesterday I had opportunity to see films Human Stain, King of the Thieves, Pornography. From the firs two, I was much exited. These films are must. Pornography was a little bit more depressing ... Kafka style ... but luckily, Pragason in Music Fest cheered me up a bit.

Human Stain was beautifull film where Colemann (A. Hopkins) and Faunia (N. Kidmann) were fighting their battle for normal life. Colemann was a white Afro-American, who denied his heritage, and Faunia had a dark history also. This tragedy of two persons was really interesting and I fully recommend seeing it in near future if you will have opportunity.

Film King of the Thieves, that was real masterpiece, thought fist when I went to see it I had big doubts. I have to admit that I did not have a clue what I am going to see, but when I saw, the story of a Ukrainian kid, sold by its parents to Germany, where they taught him thievery, and his sister was sold over poker game to the brothel ... I am not going to tell more. Go to see it.

Today I am going to see HOP, Reconstruction, It is all about love, Christie Malry´s own double-entry ... I do not know if I catch it all, bud Double-entry will be must for me ...

Next day pay attention to the films 29 palms, Invasion of Barbarians, Jonny Vang ... See ya in cinema ... Webmasta

 WEBMASTERS TIP - 24.01.2004
Dear film fans, as per tradition from last year, when with permission of Fero Fenic I wrote a Webmaster tips for the films and my comments on films that I have seen, I am taking opportunity to continue. I am not a film critic, I am normal person and film fan like you, so, please do not lynch me.... :-)

Unfortunately, yesterday I was very busy with Internet portal, so I saw only one movie, but It was great. Veronica Guerin, is a must to see. Unfortunately I guess that it has been SOLD OUT, but I hope that this film will go to the distribution. This film is base on true story from 1994-96 in Ireland, when was famous Veronica Guerin murdered by Irish drug mafia.

Today my Hot tip is "Human Stain", "Pornography", "Window of the Soul", "CHIHWASEON", "The Five Obstructions" from Lars Von Trier.

A proč 100°C? "Je to dobrý znak. A taky vaříme, jak jinak."
