Aleksandr Khvan began with assisting the director Tatyana Lioznova, writing scripts, and acting. He shot his debut, the film Owner, in 1988, but gained a wider audience with Dyuba-Dyuba (1992), a prime example of Russian film reacting to postmodern influences. His style leans towards expression through action, as exemplified in It Is Easy to Die (1999) and Carmen. He also works in television, shooting episodes for series.
